I was in AP English a long time ago, and had a conflict with the
3rd year AP English teacher. He sent me down to the regular English
class, and I realized I could write literal nonsense, but as long as it
was correctly grammatically correct, capitalized and punctuated I'd get
    an A.

I hadn't thought about that guy in a long time. I should have dedicated
    my novel to him. :)

Sounds like maybe you should have! :)

Part Zombie Apocalypse, part Earth Abides by George Stewart - the first apocalyptic fiction I read as a kid.

Wow, that's pretty cool! I haven't heard of Earth Abides before. What's the book you wrote called?

I wrote it during NANOWRIMO in 2017, added some text to get it to around 50K words, then took some out. It's still rough around the edges, but
I'm going to get around to putting it up as a kindle book some day.

Wow! Good luck, you can do it! (sorry about the previous message I hadn't read the response yet)

Why would you *WANT* to appear to be sloppy/lazy/illiterate? Sorry, but
I don't understand that kind of behavior. Is it really that much harder
to write properly? Are you in that much of a hurry that you can't do
    it?

It is a younger generation thing, the generation that grew up with text messaging, etc. Those of us who had texting introduced later probably still try to be grammatically correct.

Also, I am pretty certain they've quit stressing grammar as much in schools.

Well, the truth it's MSN/AIM/Jabber have better capabilities than SMS's even
in Europe thus, writting like that looked like an uneducated chav/illiterated trashy teen everywhere. Later, with smartphones, I agree with you, the
    traits got widespread.

When a College gets an avalanche of ignorant morons instead of the students they are expecting, they are forced to lower their standards.

If the Engineering College starts getting students who left High School ignoring what the Moment of Inertia of a body is, they will have to adapt theirplans. They won't be able to assume students know it and will have to teach it
    themselves.

This is the reason why you have 2nd year College students who are still learning the basics.

I've seen that in Spain too, it's crazy. The things is at pre-Uni HS "split" between
humanities and science, either branch enforces you to be able to parse a Spanish book
as if you were a damn Cervantes or a member of the Royal Academy of the Spanish
Language setting up the standards. OTOH, you can entirely omit Maths in Humanities,
as my SO did. And, heck, Math it's logical; try to parse complex nested phrases (oraci¢n suborndinada, I don't know how to translate it, you basically use a sentence
as an object for another one) in Spanish and a mid-difficult integral it's a breeze.
