Alpine thunderstorms
Temperatures ease for many
Issued: 0530hrs Wednesday 20th August 2025
Duty forecaster: Dan Graves
Very wet across much of central Europe as thunderstorms form over and
around the Alps, drifting east. Northern Europe trending milder.
Wednesday
More fine southern weather on most of Iberia though frequent showers
continue in north and east pars of Spain. Showers appear in the
Balearics as well as Sardinia and Corsica. Wet across northern Italy
with thundery showers. More scattered showers in central Italy,
becoming thunderstorms later in the day; mostly sunny and fine in the
south. A few scattered showers in Slovenia and Croatia, heaviest
showers west Slovenia. Otherwise dry and sunny for the Balkan States.
Scattered showers too over hills in Romania southward through Bulgaria
into Greece, extensive sun away and between showers. Only a few showers
on central Turkish coasts, otherwise fine here.
Wet for most of France with thundery spells, most frequent in the east.
These thundery showers extend east across the Alps, extensively over
Switzerland and much of Austria. Southern Germany likely to see showers
as well with local thunder. Mostly dry with mixed cloud and sun in
north Germany, the Low Countries, and Poland, only some scattered rain
northeast Poland. Likely dry too for Czechia, Slovakia, and Hungary,
though increasingly cloudy and some risk of isolated bursts of rain
late in the day. Rain moves north-to-south through Belarus. Fine in
Ukraine.
Feeling milder across much of Scandinavia, particularly Norway where
rain will be quite persistent in central and northern areas. Dry, sunny
weather for Denmark and southern Sweden. Scattered rain across northern
parts of Sweden and Finland, tending to fade as the day goes. Morning
rain in the Baltic States slips southeast, clearing most areas for a
sunny late afternoon.
Thursday
Showery outbreaks continue near north and east coasts of Spain, milder
in north Spain than recently. Still dry and very warm south/west
Iberia. Risk of showers continues for the Balearics and Sardinia and
Corsica, some chance of thundery downpours. Thunderstorm risk persists
in central and northern Italy and Slovenia, milder too in these areas.
Some heavy showers into Croatia as well. The rest of the Balkans and
southeast Europe fine with very warm sunshine.
More west weather for much of France with thundery downpours in the
east near the Alps. Northern areas substantially dry, with dry weather
extending eastward across the Low Countries, Germany, and Poland.
Expect a mix of cloud and sun in these areas. A band of heavy, thundery
rain extends eastward from east France across the Alps through to
Hungary and Slovakia. Unsettled too in Czechia, though more scattered
and light in nature. Some scattered showers into western Romania and
Ukraine as well, increasing in strength into nighttime.
A brisk westerly wind across Denmark with a few showers. Showery too in
southern Sweden with sun spells between. Remaining wet across Norway's
coast, driest in southern areas with a mix of cloud and sun. Showery
too with sunshine in Finland and into Estonia. Only scattered showers
in Latvia and Lithuania, mostly sunny away from showers.
