• iPad Pro won't boot

    From Ed Cryer@ed@somewhere.in.the.uk to comp.mobile.ipad on Wed Aug 6 09:46:53 2025
    From Newsgroup: comp.mobile.ipad

My iPad Pro won't start up. It's stuck on the white screen with the
apple in the middle. It's been on charge all night, and no change.
Any suggestions are welcome, to help it on. I'll save "bin it" for later.

Have you tried a reboot? I guess so!

Thanks for the reply and website.

None of the methods listed works.
Worst of all, when I connect it to iTunes on my PC, it's not recognised
either by iTunes or the PC itself.

There's some sign of life in the thing. It keeps the logo screen on
until the battery drains; then the display for connecting power cable
    appears; then it charges up.

I think it's bin-ready. But I'll have to smash it up before then, since
I cant' get in to delete the data.

Before you do that, do you have an Apple store nearby enough to
visit? SOme of their "Genius Bar" girls are very good. Or if you have
an authorised Apple repair shop nearby, that may also be helpful.

Have you tried letting the battery drain, then recharging it? I am
sure that won't do much but it might just work.

Apple Support wants the serial number, but I can't get into the damned
    thing to find that.

They ask for the serial number because it makes their life easier, it
allows them to easily find the model, year of build, list of internal
parts and loads of other information from their databases. If there is
a chat-line on the support pages it might be worth bothering them and
telling them why you can't find the number.

My Macs usually came with a sticker on the bottom plate which listed
the SerNO. and some other stuff. That may still be on yours. Or it
    might be worn away.

    1. on any device which can connect to the internet, log into your Apple Account using a web browser.

    2. on the left side of the display should be the name you used for your account, the email you used, the default image associated with the account, and a menu. Second from the top is ’Sign-in and Security’. Click on that.

    3. you will see several buttons. One should be ‘Account Security’. Click on that.

    4. you will be presented with your ’trusted’ phone number and a list of devices associated with your Apple Account. Locate the iPad Pro on the list, click on that.

    5. you will see info about the iPad Pro, including the serial number.

my iPad has the serial printed, in extremely small print, on the back of the device. it’s easier to go to the Apple Account online than to try to read that, unless you have an excellent magnifying glass or similar.

I actually *do* have one of those. It was a weird present from my
wife. I also have "Magnifier" on my little iPad-mini.

Neither of those help you, do they? :)

When I can't read something (which is just about all of the time when
I'm not wearing my glasses as my myopia is very good) I hold it very
close to my eyes, read out a couple of letters, a word or a couple of
digits and copy it to a screen where I can big-text it.

Could zooming in on the sticker using a 'phone or a tablet work?

    Excellent! Thanks very much.
I have an appointment with a local firm tomorrow, phone and pad repairers.
If they can't fix it then I'll go back to Apple Support.
    I'll report progress here.

    Have you contacted Apple support?
Apple Support wants the serial number, but I can't get into the damned
    thing to find that.

They ask for the serial number because it makes their life easier, it
allows them to easily find the model, year of build, list of internal
parts and loads of other information from their databases. If there is
a chat-line on the support pages it might be worth bothering them and
telling them why you can't find the number.

My Macs usually came with a sticker on the bottom plate which listed
the SerNO. and some other stuff. That may still be on yours. Or it
    might be worn away.

my iPad has the serial printed, in extremely small print, on the back of the device. it’s easier to go to the Apple Account online than to try to read that, unless you have an excellent magnifying glass or similar.

I use a jewler's headset for the small numbers stamped on Apple devices the last few years. Find it handy to work on the innards of most modern laptops.

    1. on any device which can connect to the internet, log into your Apple
    Account using a web browser.

    2. on the left side of the display should be the name you used for your
account, the email you used, the default image associated with the
    account,
and a menu. Second from the top is ’Sign-in and Security’. Click on that.

    3. you will see several buttons. One should be ‘Account Security’. Click >> on that.

    4. you will be presented with your ’trusted’ phone number and a list of >> devices associated with your Apple Account. Locate the iPad Pro on the
    list,
    click on that.

    5. you will see info about the iPad Pro, including the serial number.

    Excellent! Thanks very much.
I have an appointment with a local firm tomorrow, phone and pad repairers.
If they can't fix it then I'll go back to Apple Support.
    I'll report progress here.

I collected my busted iPad today from the local shop.
No joy! The guy said he'd "flashed" it several times and got different
errors. When I asked what the errors were he said "error 9" was one of
them. He said it must be a hardware fault.
I didn't push it any further because I was trying to stop myself asking
how he could "flash" the damned thing when it wouldn't boot up. I
    suspect a bullshit merchant.

I feel loth to hand it over to Apple. It's 8 years old, stuck with iOS something that gets no updates, and I suspect the cost would be in the hundreds of pounds.

I walked around town and looked in the windows of all the tech shops.
They have stacks of iPad Pros on display, some older ones as cheap as
£60. The most appealing one was 10th generation, still in its pristine
box, £245, 2 year warranty. The guy said it was unused.
That price is probably below what Apple would charge me to replace the
RAM on my crippled, bygone one.
