• Good News For Nvidia Fans

The proprietary Nvidia drivers would, for me, fail to build with the open-source
variant. I had to rely on the proprietary stuff.

I posted several bug reports to the Nvidia forums but got no response.

However, as I was building the new kernel-6.18 I decided to give Nvidia
    another shot.

It worked! The Nvidia drivers actually built the open-source variant!
It seems that the problem is fixed!

I have a Turing GPU on my machines and this is very important as the open-source driver is recommended for Turing and beyond.

    For kernel 6.18, stock NVIDIA 580.105.08 MIT/GPL driver doesn't
build correctly -- but can be made to work with a trivial patch,
    which I've posted twice now.

NVIDIA 590.44.01 (the beta driver) builts against 6.18, but I
found it buggy for my setup. I haven't posted to the
developer forum yet. Meanwhile, I'm using 580.105.08 which is
    rock-solid for my configuration.

    (X11 forever! :) )

BTW, the bug I ran into with the beta driver is the window
in-focus intermittently...disappears. Yes, it blinks in- and
out-of-existance. This was true for chrome, balloon text from
a chrome element, and xfce4-terminal. It was "interesting"
using the terminal to remove the drivers so I'd have a clean
slate for re-installing NVIDIA 580.105.08 drivers.
