• 5G, madam. No 4G, only 5G. We cannot supply 4G.

The 80-something year old friend I posted about a couple weeks ago told
me that her phone works fine in New Jersey and Colorado (cherry hill and denver) and it worked in DC, but it won't work in Baltimore, and she has learned the reason. It's not a 5G phone and the towers for Boost Mobile (T-mobile's iirc) only have 5G here in Baltimore. I didn't think that
was possible, but it would account for her symptoms. Is it possible?

My phone uses Mint Mobile which also uses T-mobile's towers. Does using
t he same towers mean using the same G's? That is, only 5G? Because I
rarely make calls, but my data seems to work everywhere around here.

They're coverage map shows nothing about 4G vs. 5G, and it shows
complete coverage at the address where she is staying and can't use her
phone. But the phone worked fine in Denver and Cherry Hill, so why not
    here?

I missed it. The coverage map has small changes in color, but shows 5G
for where my friend is staying, and probably the whole city of
Baltimore, but the question remains, is it possible that a 4G phone
wouldn't work? I've never heard of such a thing, but that's what Boost
Mobile told her. Yet her phone works fine in Denver and NJ near
Philadelphia. Any guesses how that can be?

It actually depends on the contract Mint has.

I called Boost today and the guy never answered my question, wanted to
look up what model phone it is, so I think he didn't understand the
quesion or doesn't know much, but I no longer belive lack of 4G is why
it doesn't work in Baltimore. But I think Boost, like me, can't
imageine why it doesnt' work and that's why they made up the story of no
    4G.

    Has VoLTE been mentioned?

I think relatively few people know exactly *how* a 4G/5G mobile network
    hangs together ...

I started to tell her about that, but at that time, she still thought
Boost was going to fix it for her. Then she was in Denver for 10 days
and the phone worked there. And she found she can call me and others on Whatsapp, I should have brought it up again but time was very short on
Monday. Now she's in N.J. again where the phone works. She doesn't
live in the US. She was here because her daughter was very sick and for
her own medical treatment (Covered by Medicare, but only when in the US)
I think on the next trip she'll go with some company other than Boost.

Isn't it the same as how 3G/4G worked together?
