• USB Flash Driver to Samsung Phone

    From croy@croy@spam.invalid.net to comp.mobile.android on Wed Jul 30 17:13:11 2025
    From Newsgroup: comp.mobile.android

Using a "go" cable, I connected a flash stick to my S24 FE, but the phone doesn't seem to see the stick, which has music, photos, etc. on it.

Should I be able to make this work?

    Try rebooting the phone.

I sometimes try to connect my phone to my computer to copy photos and
other files, and 9 times out of 10 the phone only sees it as a
charger. It's sometimes necessary to reboot the phone and/or the
computer several times to get the phone to "see" the connection.

How is the USB drive formatted? FAT, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, exFAT, ext, or something else?

When you plug the USB flash drive into a desktop PC or laptop, can it
see the media files on it?

Did you configure Android to recognize the USB port as an MTP device?
Under Developer Options(*), find Select USB Configuration. What is your
    set to? Some settings are:

Charging: USB port only usable for charging. Data lines are ignored.
MTP: Use this instead of PTP.
    PTP: Another media protocol.
    other modes

    Old, unreliable, sometimes doesn't work.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Transfer_Protocol

I don't have your phone to see if there as USB options other than under Developer Options. I did find:

    https://www.galaxys24manual.com/change-default-usb-configuration-on-galaxy-s24/

(*) If Developer Options are not listed under your Android settings, you
have to enable it. There are general routines, but best is to search on "<phonebrand> <phonemodel> developer options enable".

If you're trying to copy the contents of the stick to the phone, then
why not plug both into a PC and drag and drop from one to the other?

When I upgraded my phone, I had the problem of copying all my stuff from
the old to the new, and couldn't use the default Android method because
the old phone was running too old a version. After various copy apps
from the store had failed to copy it all without some fairly major fuck
up or other, I simply connected both to a PC and got a much more
    sensible result using Explorer!

    FAT32

see the media files on it?

    Yes, no problems at all.

When I connect the phone to my Windows PC, I have no trouble exchanging
files back and forth. But plugging a flash stick (FAT32) to the phone gets
    me nowhere.

Did you configure Android to recognize the USB port as an MTP device?

What I'm after is being able to view photos and other multimedia files on
the phone--files that are located on the flash drive.

Also, when in the field, using a trail camera that does not have a viewing screen, I'd like to be able to plug the SD card into a card reader, and
plug that to the phone, and be able to view the photos/videos.

I was hoping that the "go" cable would allow me to use flash sticks and
card reader like external storage on the phone, but so far, I'm dead in the water.

Further testing has shown that some USB sticks work, and some don't. All
    are FAT32.

Of the stick I have to test with, two don't work with the phone (no
    response):

    Samsung 128GB
    Patriot RAGE2 128GB

Four that do work with the phone are:

    PNY 4GB
    ONN 16GB
    Patriot 32GB
    Lexar 64GB

Maybe 128GB is too large for the Android system? I would think not, but my knowledge of Android is very limited.

Needs to be a proper USB OTG (On-The-Go) cable. I once tried to use a
cable that seemed correct, but was not actually an OTG cable, and it
    simply did not work.

Seems to be a size limitation of your phone. Not Android per se, but of
the phone and the software it has installed. Can happen.
