It's no surprise --Valve announced their intentions way back in late
2023!-- but now it's finallly happened.* The newest versions of Steam
will no longer run on Windows 7 or 8 (or MacOS 10.13/10.14). So if you
still have a Windows 7 gaming PC, well... say goodbye to any
Steam-launched games on that system.
Time to upgrade those old Win7 machines to Linux, I guess.

Look ma, I'm necroposting!
For anyone still running Windows 7, I saw announcement this in another newsgroup:
"Steam Beta client (December 4th, 2025 build) has been
unofficially backported to work on Windows 7 SP1 x64 and
Windows 8.x x64, thanks to EAZY BLACK!MUST FULLY UPDATE
WINDOWS FIRST!
https://dl.bobpony.com/software/steam/"
So all you have to do to keep running your Steam games is download
this completely untrusted software on your computer and give it access
to your Steam account. Sounds good, eh? ;-)
And no, I'm not really recommending this. Just upgrade your older PC
to Linux and run the official Steam client for Linux. It's safer all
around.

They have BEEN trying for a few years already and getting a lot of >resistance.

Largely because Microsoft have been dumb-asses about it and trying to
get people to dump their working hardware instead of allowing an easy
upgrade from Windows 10. I get Microsoft's desire for full hardware
TPM support for Windows 11, but forcing people to buy a new PC just
for that does not sit well with a lot of people (especially in this
economy). It doesn't help that there are increasingly viable
competitors to Windows11 too: Chromebooks, Linux, SteamDecks and
mobile devices all can be, for many users, quite capable of doing
everything some end-users need. So alienating your users doesn't seem
the best strategy right now.
Of course, the real goal these days is to get everybody to 'upgrade'
to a minimally viable hardware platform, where it all it really needs
to do is connect to a server where the REAL processing gets done (for
a minor subscription fee ;-)
