• FREE GAME: motherfucking CIVILIZATION VI Platinum

Thursdays. I just can't seem to get the hang of Thursdays. There's not
even any lasagna. There are free games, though. Case in point:

    * Civilization VI https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/sid-meiers-civilization-vi--platinum-edition
Okay, Epic. I take back all of the bad things I've ever
said about you (Well, most of them. Some of them. At least
one). But c'mon, this is a big game to be giving away.
Sure, it's probably just because Civ6 sank like a stone
on release and the publishers are desperate to get the
numbers up, but from all accounts, even if this isn't a
very good "Civ-game", it's still a pretty good game. And
I'm happy to add it to my library... especially if I don't
have to pay for it. Good job, Epic.

A good free game is nice and all, but I still want some lasagna.

    See you all next week!

It's fun on my low end computer without the glowing keyboard, but have a glowing keyboard and it's shutdown, boot after every game. I played Civ
V up to 80 achieves & 1300 hrs as a replacement. Needs a QoL patch for glowing keyboards.

I have to admit, I was a lot more excited about this game than I think
it deserves, because I thought they were giving away "Civilization
VII", which came out a few months ago, and not "Civilization VI",
which is almost 9 years old now. Don't get me wrong, getting the
platinum edition is nice, but it's not a forgive-every-sin type of
game. Especially since it's something I already own on Epic anyway ;-)

But this tells us two things:

    1) There have been so many Civilization games I can't
keep track of which one is the most recent, and

    2) Civilization VI made incredibly little imprint on
me that I can't differentiate it from the other
    games in the series.

Oh well. I guess we'll see "Civilization VII" as an Epic freebie in
2034. See you all then! ;-)

I have it on Steam and for some reason loading times were absolutely atrocious. The game itself didn't even run so badly, but it was up to 50 minutes on the loading screen. Most of my playtime in Steam was just
waiting for the thing to finally get into the game.

But that was a few years ago, maybe I should try it again on my new
computer. (which also already hit the hardware ceiling on some recent releases)

I don't remember Civ 6 taking the world by storm so I think your

I liked 3 quite a bit because of the company-created mods. There was an
alien encounters mod and a fantasy setting. I never finished playing

I like 3 as well but I never used any mods for it other than a few
    graphical ones.

I did mess with the rules a bit though. For instance, I felt my
troops were becoming obsolete too quickly on standard map sizes so I
increased the length of time you needed to research each tech.

I've enjoyed every Civilization game up to Civilization V. The sixth
game was disappointment for one simple reason: the AI was dumb as
a rock. Civlilzation always had the best AI of all the 4X games, it
wasn't really close. When a message popped up on your screen saying
a computer player declared war on you, you knew there was a huge army
sitting just outside of your vision range. In Civ6 you'll be lucky to
find a couple of weak units at your border.

I didn't have a problem with how they changed the systems up thoughout
the series. I enjoyed Endless Legend's district system and I liked Civilization VI's take on it. That's why I was able to spend way too
many hours playing the game on the hope that maybe this time the AI
would be fixed. It'll be why I'll give a try now that I have access
to the expansions. Maybe the AI is broken because it expects all the
features of the expansions to be in play. Probably not though.

When playing a new Civilization game I'm not looking for the same game
but with better graphics. I'd be happy just playing the original game
if the game play never evolved from that. I want them to mess with
the formula so I actually have a new game to play. I think the big
mistake Firaxis made with Civilization VII was not just sticking with
the Civilization VI engine. Maybe redo the art in a different style,
but no one really cares if the game is using cutting edge shading effects.
Only having to reskin the UI would've also helped with a lot of usability complaints about the game.

I found the second expansion increased the difficulty level for the
player, as far as empire management, which evened things out a little
    more.

But it was the *second* expansion, and I figure once I figure out how to
deal with influence and revolting cities, I'll be back to "gee, the AI is
    dumb as rocks."

Influence and fealty seriously inhibit the ability to run over a rival
empire roughshod. In Civ V, you just ran over the whole thing and built courthouses. In VI with the second expansion, you get more than two
cities in and you've got serious problems with the conquered just telling
you to pound sand and give the city back to its rightful civ.

Holy crap this is a good one. Now I own the first six games. I really
need to get going on this series. I am only up to playing IV.

Thank you Spalls for not forgetting its Thursday!

Oh well. I guess we'll see "Civilization VII" as an Epic freebie in
2034. See you all then! ;-)

Well, as far as I'm concerned the whole series went downhill after II
and I don't want to bother with an account on Epic, so pass.

I played a lot of both II and III but I can never remember which one I
liked more and being so long ago I can't even remember which one was
which. IV I enjoyed but not as much. I bought V but I think by then I
was all Civ'ed out and didn't even manage to complete a full game.

My favourite Civ game though isn't even technically a Civ game, Alpha Centauri.

    Civ in space. Close enough.

I wonder where Alpha Centauri sits for Civ fans if you included it in
the mainline series. I remember it being very well received at the
time. I think I would have liked it a lot myself but I never got
    around to playing it.

It was great for multiplayer. Had a hell of a game with some comrades
    from another froup.

Hmmm. My rankings probably don't match most Civ-fans, but I'd put it
in third place, between Civ2 and Civ4. But I'm the oddball who loves
the original 1991 game most of all the versions.

    My Civilization Rankings:

    Civilization 1 (1992)
    Civilization 4 (2006)
    (Alpha Centauri) (1999)
    Civilization 2 (1996)
    Civilization 5 (2010)
    Civilization 3 (2004)

I left out "Civilization 6" (2016) because, as mentioned in an earlier
post, I can't really remember much about it. If pressed, I'd probably
slot it between Civ3 and Civ5. "Civilization 7" (2025) is similary
excluded simply because I haven't played it yet.

"Alpha Centauri" (or, as I often think of it in my head, "Alpha Civ")
had a lot of things I liked about it. The fact that it wasn't set on
Earth was a very welcome change; the new setting and ideas were quite
well implemented. But the gameplay (and to some degree, the visuals)
just weren't quite as engaging. In some ways, the game was just TOO
alien for me to immerse myself in like I did with the other games in
the series. So, yes; I loved it because it was different, and hated it
    for the same reason ;-P

But I'd like to give a shout-out to "Civilization Revolution", at
least the IPad version; although a cutback and very obviously
made-for-mobile game, it captured the feel of Civilization quite well.
It's much shallower than the other Civ games, but it's made so you can
finish a campaign fairly quickly (in a matter of hours, not days or
weeks). It would probably get a spot between 2 and 5.

The "proper" name for that game is SMAC. Because it is that addictive. :P

I think you forgot Civ IV: Colonization. Colonization is an old game
that I believe pre-dates Civilization I. I mention it mainly because I'm looking for mods for this game (it ships with none).

Civ games can be 'bad' for their ability to suck you into to just one
more turn but SMAC dialled that up to eleven!

I never had that one more turn syndrome. That's for dumb berks.
There's 500 turns in a game; they are already too fucking long.
