It may have required the sad passing of a rock-n-roll classic (Ozzy
Ozbourne) but at least we're getting a free game.

    * Brutal Legend
    https://doublefine.itch.io/brutal-legend
    This one's a weird mish-mash of action/adventure,
platforming, driving, beat-em-up and real-time strategy.
Its game-play may be all over the place, but that's almost
incidental to what the project really is about: it's a love
    letter to heavy metal. It's got the songs, it's got the look;
hell, it's got Jack Black (not to mention a bunch of heavy
metal stars, including Ozzy Ozbourne). It's not necessarily
one of those games you play to the end, but it's definitely a
game you want to at least give a look; do the first chapter
or so and soak in the ambience.

But hurry, it's only free for 11.1 hours (666 minutes, natch)... and
as of this posting the first hour is already spent.

Thanks Ozzy. Even in your death you're bringing great things to us.

Thank! I claimed it even though I am not into that music genre, singer,
    and band.

Double Fine is my favorite publisher right now because of Bastion and
The Cave, but unfortunately this requires a registered account, which I
    have zero time for.

I'll be honest; I'm not really a fan of Ozzy either. And I'm very
hit-or-miss when it comes to heavy metal in general (there's some
    songs I like, but a lot I don't); it's not a genre I naturally
    gravitate towards.

But I still maintain the game is worth at least looking at just
because it's such a labor of love and appreciation for the music.
Visually, the setting looks like a heavy metal album cover brought to
life, and it captures that weird fantastical vibe of many heavy metal
songs. Ozzy isn't the only heavy-metal singer to voice characters
either. And, of course, its soundtrack includes a lot of heavy metail
    classics.

The gameplay is less memorable. I wouldn't call it bad, but it's a
weird mix of ideas that never quites work well. The marketing of the
game was especially poor in this regard, since it portrayed the game
as a typical third-person action/adventure and a lot of people
    disliked its strategy elements.

But even if I didn't care too much for the playing of the game, I
quite enjoyed how much the developers obviously loved the heavy metal
genre. You can FEEL their love for it in the game. That alone made it
worth the purchase, for me at least. I didn't stick with it very long
but I appreciated my short time with it, and didn't regret spending my hard-earned cash on it.

Of course, it's not free any more. And while all the above remains
true, I'm not sure I'd actually recommend PAYING for the game if
you're not into really heavy metail.

For free, though, it was a no brainer. Grab it, and just play it for a
while. You probably won't stick around long, but just appreciate the
effort even if it's not to your taste.
