• Well, they're making a FarCry TV show

Yeah, I don't expect good things from this.

Some video-game-to-TV-show adaptations I can get excited for. They
(usually) don't work out that well, but I can see _why_ they're being
made (besides, you know, the obvious reason: money, money, money).
"Halo", "The Last of Us", "Fallout"... I get it. The games have strong settings, and memorable characters.

"Farcry"? It's writing and characters have always been the _weakest_
part of the series. It's survived on its visuals, a satisfying (if
over-used) open-world formula, and agreeable combat. These make for
good _games_. But that's the one part of the product that doesn't
    translate to the TV screen.

More, Ubisoft expects the show to last multiple seasons, with each
season exploring a different game, and with a different cast each
season. No word on which game gets the first nod.

It just seems such a strange choice for an adaptation, one chose more
because the games have better name-recognition than more worthy
alternatives. Although even when their IP _has_ a strong story and
characters, Ubisoft still manages to mess it up (remember the "Sands
    of Time" movie?).

Still, I suspect the TV show will be more watchable than the 2008 Uwe
Boll movie. But it seems odd that they didn't take something like
"Assassin's Creed" and translate that. At least that series had
recognizable lore, and Ezio was a well-liked character.

Side note: in 'researching' the original article (I use that term very loosely), I discovered they had made a TV series based on the "Maniac
Mansion" adventure game by LucasArts. I think I /sort/ of knew that
already, but it never really clicked. Now there is nothing I want to
    watch more. ;-)

Alas, it is not available on DVD or on any streaming services.

One suspects there is a good reason for that last.

If the Wikipedia article is anything to go by* it actually got fairly
positive reviews when it came out. It essentially takes the Edison
family (the 'antagonists') of the Maniac Mansion game and slots them
into a typical 'family sitcom' formula. It shared a lot of the same
cast writers came from SCTV, which was quite good. Gamers didn't like
it because it was only loosely based on the source material but taken
by itself, the show apparently was memorable.

I suspect, though, that it hasn't aged well, since it riffs off the
tropes of sitcoms from 40 years ago. You have to be in the vibe of
shows of that era to appreciate it.

The show is, of course, available in certain darker corners of the
web, but poking around those parts always makes me feel icky. ;-)

And, as it turns out, there _is_ an "Assassins Creed" show in
production. Well, thank god; I was afraid Ubisoft wasn't fully
monetizing all its properties in every possible way. All those
settlements for abusing your employees don't come cheap, after all!
    ;-)

Anyway, very little info is known about the show except it will
apparently be set in Rome during the era of Emperor Nero. No hints as
to whether there will be futurey-time bits or not (the conceit of the
Assassins Creed games is that you're reliving historical events
through a future-tech machine called the Animus that lets you relive
genetic memories but it is not clear if that idea translated to the tv
    screen).

Anyway, it amused me to learn that a show was actually in production*
right after I chastised Ubisoft for not doing that. Not that I think
the Assassins Creed show will be good (especially if Ubisoft has any
input on the story; they've terrible writers)... but I still think the Assassins Creed setting has more promise than FarCry.

Almost no information is available. It's quite possible that even the developers don't know yet, as it may not have been decided. It's not
even clear if they're going to iterate on the stories of the original
games or just create new tales entirely. Heck, even the 'anthology'
idea (where each season is in a different location with different
protagonists) may not survive the development process.

But if I were to make a guess on likelihood, I'd say the "Farcry 3"
story ("bro-dudes on paradise island) is most likely, with "Farcry 5"
(cop fighting apocalyptic cult) in second place, "Farcry 4" (wild
times in pseudo-Tibet) after that, and "Farcry 6" (rocketpacks in
Cuba) in fourth place.* I don't see much chance on "Farcry 2"
(depressing romp through war torn Africa). "FarCry Primal" (caveman shenanigans) and "FarCry: Blood Dragon" (80s action cartoon) are even
less likely, and the original Farcry game (and its console spin-offs)
    (dude fighting mutants) virtually impossible.

Although if they did film "Farcry 3", I can imagine "Blood Dragon"
being some weird one-off episode where the protagonist has some
    drug-induced fever dream.

More likely though, I think, is that we get 'all new' characters and situations. Hollywood does love to meddle (and the game stories and
settings aren't very good to begin with anyway).

    * well, unless Ubisoft intervenes and pushes it up the matrix because
its their newest game and they want to boost sales
