• CRAP Poll #8 (No, the other #8): Spend 'dat cash, why don't you?

    From Spalls Hurgenson@spallshurgenson@gmail.com to comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action on Sat Dec 6 12:56:19 2025

It's been a month. Let's do another one of these things.

    -----

Q: Why aren't you buying more games?

    a) Price!
They've gotten too damned expensive! $80? Get outta here!
    b) No value for money!
Why should I pay and get a buggy game with bad
mechanics and half the content I used to get.
    c) No time!
Have you seen the size of my backlog? I can't even
finish the games I already own
    d) That content!
I just don't like the sort of games they're
    releasing anymore.
    e) It's not free!
Have you seen how many games you can get for free
these days? Why bother to buy?
    f) Who says I'm buying fewer games?
You wanna see how high my credit card bill is?
    g) I'm a naughty pirate!
I get my games on the high seas!
    h) _My_ Grandma loves me!
I get all my games as gifts and don't ever have to
    buy any myself
    i) I don't buy video games!
I'm not sure why I am in this newsgroup; I think I
took a wrong turn at Albuquerque
    j) Your options are stupid!
The reason I buy fewer games is: __________________

    ----------

Wow, this CRAP poll is, like, a /real/ survey question. Marketing
would be so proud of me! ;-)

Anyway, I think most of us here will find that _most_ of the answers
are at least a little bit applicable to them. But try to pick the one
that's the /most/ relevant to your decision.

Myself, well... the sad thing is, I'm probably answer (f). I still buy
_a lot_ of games. (This may not surprise you). I very rarely pay full
price... but I'm still shelling out cash and The Number is getting fat
on my purchased games. But the reason I buy fewer games /day-one/
(rather than waiting for the inevitable sale) is definitely answer
(a). The price is just too high. I'd buy even more if the 'default'
    starting price wasn't $70.

So what's keeping you from unwinding those purse-strings and shelling
    out for a new game?

Well if I have to pick just one, I would pick d) That content! -
Triple A games don't interest me and haven't for a very long time now.
But d) isn't entirely true as long as indie games are a thing because
they do make the games I like and I still buy those.

But if I can cheat a bit and choose two, I would choose e) as well. I
have so many games now.. many of them for free, that buying more seems
kind of silly. But I do it anyway.

Wait, I'm not entirely clear on the subject. Are you trying to say you
    have too many games?

I'm all in support of the spreadsheet thing, though. Make it with
charts and tables and formulas and booze and hookers! That'll show
    them.
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
In fact, forget the charts and tables and formulas. ;-)

But, yeah, I can totally relate. Were I never to spend another dime,
thanks to all the freebies, still it's getting really hard to not
overwhelm on new games. Add to that all the games I already own and
    well...

As evidenced by my 'what have you been playing' monthly playlist
entries, I struggle to play three to five games per month. My monthly acquisitions /far/ exceed that number. Even were I to avoid the crap
filler games ("Oooh, another hidden-object adventure game on Legacy!"
;-) I'd still be adding to the list faster than I could clear it.

But The Number is a demanding mistress, so that 'Add to library'
    button keeps getting clicked.

    All of those.

    j) 1. lost a lot of interest in gaming, been reading more.
    2. No demos. Between all the things above I'm not wanting to pay
that much for games I can't give an honest try. I bought Tainted Grail because I was able to play a demo and liked it, that and rms recommended
it. I've gotten burned too much on games in the last few years. Too
much being any amount I've paid a good deal for that I didn't care for.
    3. I'm kind of paying for them in that I've used PS+ and Xbox Live subscriptions to try a lot of games, But really that's more like paying
for demos and with the recent price hikes for those, I'm done. I've
finished a few games I didn't pay for, but tried a lot more and found
they wouldn't have been worth buying even for two dollars. I'm actually getting tired of even trying all the free games. There's also a lot on
apple apps sub which my wife has for the family so a lot I could try on
the tablet (which I guess counts for H.) She's paying for both that and prime.
    4. Games tend to be a lot longer now. Heck the DLC from Elden ring
    is longer than most games.
    5. Looking at my list of games to replay, try again, that I own and
want to try, I'm a lot more excited about that than anything on my
wishlist at the prices they're at at least. Not to mention on GOG I show
over 800 games, but did manage to connect Epic, Xbox and Ubisoft, so
includes those and another ~600 on Steam. If I can't find something to
play out of 1400 games, there's something wrong.

Wow, this CRAP poll is, like, a /real/ survey question. Marketing
would be so proud of me! ;-)

are you doing market research :(

Anyway, I think most of us here will find that _most_ of the answers
are at least a little bit applicable to them. But try to pick the one
that's the /most/ relevant to your decision.

Myself, well... the sad thing is, I'm probably answer (f). I still buy
_a lot_ of games. (This may not surprise you). I very rarely pay full price... but I'm still shelling out cash and The Number is getting fat
on my purchased games.

    $70 games kinda suckkkkk

    Anyways, I'm floating between A) and B), since I don't really have a ton
of spending money and ALSO I always feel a bit bad investing in a new
game if I'm not sure I'll like it/it doesnt have a demo or something

At the very least, Steam is pretty good with refunds
