• c64 dataset load

has anyone here seen an issue like I'm having?

I write a simpl program in basic on my c64
    I then type save "programname"
my c64 says press play and record
    then I rewind the tape.
I attempt to load the program.

    load "programname"

The motor on the dataset starts up and I press play on the tapedrive.
c64 stops the tape and says found programname
then when it attempts to load the program the dataset makes noise like the moder wants to run, but it doesn't spin the tape (the play button is depressed).

so odd. I can't tell if my dataset tape drive is actually saving the data, or why it won't complete the loading process.

    Any ideas would be awesome.

If you started with a blank tape you can try it in a regular tape deck
and listen for the tell tale screeching noise. If the tape is still
blank then you know you didn't save anything.

But it says it found "programname", so something's on the tape.

A very common problem with old cassette players is that the drive
belts deteriorate. I'm guessing you need a new belt.

I'll have to try and dissesemble the drive. The odd thing is the off-brand dataset is the one with the issue but my OG dataset works without an issue.

I used another dataset and it will load the program. So I'm not sure what is wrong with the dataset that causes the control of the dataset to get lost.
