Snow in North and South Korea

A winter storm brought cold air and snow to the Korean Peninsula on December 13-15, 2020. The Moderate Resolution imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of snow in both North and South Korea on December 15, 2020.

Seoul, South Korea reported its first measurable snowfall of the season, reporting 0.8 cm (0.3 in) at 6 a.m. local time on December 13 and was expecting up to 7 cm (2.8 in) by the end of the day, according to the YONHAP News Agency. The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) issued a heavy snow advisory for Seoul and other parts of South Korea that same day.

While the storm has settled, leaving a blanket of white across the Peninsula, cold air remains intact. The KMA issued a Cold Wave Advisory running from December 12, 2020 until January 1, 2021 for most of the country.
